چکیده

In this issue we have included a review paper from one of our sister journals, Techovation: “Technological Infrastructure and Regional Economic Development of Biotechnology Firms” by Peter Haug and Philip Ness. The paper describes empirical evidence from 37 commercial biotechnology firms on background attributes, company origins, financial capital resources, market distributions and strategic alliance. Data were collected through extensive personal interviews with senior executives and scientists. This paper contributes evidence on the origins and operations of commercial biotechnology firms in the state of Washington. Whilst at first glance it may seem a little odd to have included a review of US biotech start-ups in a journal dedicated to biosensors, I have my reasons. I am keen to feature new start-up companies in the biosensor field, knowing that it is likely that many of you would like to have a “start-up” company of your own. This is, of course, one of the most frequent types of “little acorn” from which the “mighty oaks” of commerce grow. There have not, I believe, been any such studies solely concerned with biosensor start-ups we hope someone will do one so we could publish it! Until there is, I thought it would be quite instructive for readers to find out how their erstwhile brethren in biotech have been faring in the Washington area of the USA. Whether this mode of business start-up and its success (or failures) is in any way indicative of moves in other related technologies or of other geographic areas it is difficult to tell. The review should give some indication of the prospects ahead for any would-be entrepreneur in biosensors. It was not my intention to discourage, but maybe the pass rate shown here could provide salutary lessons and help avoid costly mistakes.

Application of conducting polymers to biosensors.

Recently, conducting polymers have attracted much interest in the development of biosensors. The electrically conducting polymers are known to possess numerous features, which allow them to act as excellent materials for immobilization of biomolecules and rapid electron transfer for the fabrication of efficient biosensors. In the present review an attempt has been made to describe the salient f...

Biosensors for direct determination of organophosphate pesticides.

Direct, selective, rapid and simple determination of organophosphate pesticides has been achieved by integrating organophosphorus hydrolase with electrochemical and opitical transducers. Organophosphorus hydrolase catalyzes the hydrolysis of a wide range of organophosphate compounds, releasing an acid and an alcohol that can be detected directly. This article reviews development, characterizati...

Advances in nanowire bioelectronics.

Semiconductor nanowires represent powerful building blocks for next generation bioelectronics given their attractive properties, including nanometer-scale footprint comparable to subcellular structures and bio-molecules, configurable in nonstandard device geometries readily interfaced with biological systems, high surface-to-volume ratios, fast signal responses, and minimum consumption of energ...

Zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine) hydrogels for glucose biosensors in complex media.

Zwitterionic hydrogels based on poly(carboxybetaine) methacrylate (polyCBMA) were developed to protect implantable electrochemical glucose biosensors from biofouling in complex media. To enhance the linearity and sensitivity of the sensing profile, both physical and chemical adsorption methods were developed. Results show that glucose sensors coated with polyCBMA hydrogels via the chemical meth...

1 What is bioelectronics ? Sandro

Although the term was first proposed in 1968, the birth of bioelectronics as we know it today is much more recent. In fact, the first meaning of the word bioelectronics was the intermolecular electron transfer found in biological systems [1], while its modern meaning is quite different, as discussed in this chapter. Tony Turner, founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Biosensors and...
